HEARTH WARMING: GETTING YOUR HOME READY FOR FALL

“Have nothing in your home that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.” Morris

  1. GET RID OF THE CLUTTER.
“Your home is who you are, not who you ought to be. You will express yourself in your home whether or not you want to.” De Wolfe
NO “If only”, “When I get….” We need to accept and bless our circumstances and discover who we are.
  2. USE WHAT YOU HAVE; DO NOT SPEND A FORTUNE, UNLESS OF COURSE, IT IS ON FURNITURE. “They should not be called ‘living rooms’; those are ‘existing rooms’ They should be called ‘the joy of living’ rooms.”
  3. YOUR HOME IS A BLANK CANVAS:

Each ROOM is a painting:

Every WALL is another work of art:

So, we need to talk about the elements and design of art pieces/each room, wall and total home. These are:

  • Line:
  • Shape/Form:
  • Color:
  • Texture:
  • Value:
  • Repetition:
  • Focal Point:
  • Balance:
  • Contrast:
  • Something weird in every room:

“We have a sense of identity, personality, character, energy, enthusiasm, and warmth. This is who we are; this is how we live. It’s how our home looks.” Ralph Lauren

How important is this? It is very important for the ultimate goal of all people each day is to GO HOME!!! Home is where our spirits, bodies and relationships are nurtured and replenished. We come home after exposure to the cold and chaos of the external world…

“WARMTH” is a perfect descriptor for a FALL home. In fact, people want, above all, COMFORT…which includes a warm “feel.” Here are some easy ways to achieve warmth.

(USE WARM COLORS IN YOUR ACCESSORIES AND ART; THE WARM COLORS ARE RED, YELLOW AND ORANGE AND THE SHADES AND TINTS WITHIN!)

  1. Lamps- (light) at three levels-high, medium and low.
  2. Pillows-perfect way to achieve texture.
  3. At least one fall colored throw per room.
  4. Three items of texture or three textures in three groupings in an average size room. Smaller room=fewer groupings. Remember the Golden Triangle (three heights per grouping of three items.)
  5. Go natural:birds, turtle shells, flowers, cones, animal prints or tracks, BERRIES.
  6. Something metallic/glitzy
  7. Area rugs (not “placemats”) in fall colors that are not floating but are anchored by furniture.
  8. Candles on wood candlesticks with candle rings.
  9. Something wild, weird or whimsical per room .

Some seasonal choices are gourds, or pumpkins in “nests” of fall leaves in baskets, red apples in yellow bowls, red berry garlands on high shelves, fall art, pumpkins in branches in a red ceramic floor vase, red runners with beads, roosters, basketry, red lampshades, weavings or materials on the walls, chrysanthemums, hydrangeas, ranunculus and dahlias in fall colors.
LOOK FOR ARCHING, BRANCHING, FORKING, AND REPETITION TO CREATE RHYTHM. VICISSITUDES AND DICHOTOMIES MAKE FOR PERSONALITY AND WARMTH.
